How to make Zalgo text
- 1
Type or paste your text
Enter a word, a name or a short line in the left box. The generator starts with the classic Zalgo setting: marks above and below the letters at full strength, with through-marks switched off.
- 2
Adjust the intensity
Use the intensity slider and the three region switches to make the effect lighter or heavier. Randomize changes the seed, so the same words get a different arrangement of marks.
- 3
Copy and test it
Copy the output into the app where you plan to post it. A preview cannot predict how another font or line height will place the marks, so test the exact destination first.
- 4
Clean garbled text back to normal
Paste a Zalgo message into either box and press Clean to normal text. The tool removes the combining marks and returns the original letters. Ordinary accents are removed too, so café becomes cafe.
Where the name Zalgo comes from
Zalgo began as an internet horror meme on message boards in the mid-2000s. The character was imagined as something enormous waiting behind the surface of reality, and the joke was that merely writing its name damaged the page. The piled-up accent marks were the visual punchline: the text looked as if the screen itself were coming apart.
The original story faded, but the style kept the name. Today “Zalgo text” describes any text with many Unicode combining marks stacked above and below the base letters. It is a decorative text effect, not a cipher, a font or a language.
Why some platforms delete Zalgo text
A platform can remove or reject Zalgo text for several practical reasons. Character limits count every combining mark as a separate code point, so a short word can exceed a post or profile limit. Spam filters also treat long runs of marks as a way of disguising words, and some systems normalize or strip unusual sequences before saving them.
Rendering is the other reason. Tall stacks can overlap the line above, push a button out of shape or escape a fixed-height container. Many apps cap how many marks they draw for each character, and a few replace the result with plain letters. What reaches your readers is therefore a decision made by the app, not a guarantee from the generator.
If you want a more digital, scanline look with marks running through the letters instead of piling up, the glitch text generator gives you the same engine with separate control over each mark region.
Length and readability
Every combining mark is a real character even though it takes up no horizontal space. At full strength this generator adds up to eight marks above and eight below each base letter, so a ten-letter word can contain more than 160 code points. Services that count characters for a bio, a caption or a chat message see all of them.
Readability drops quickly as the stack grows. Short words in a large font survive heavy decoration; long sentences turn into a texture. Screen readers may announce marks one by one or skip them entirely, and search engines generally index the underlying letters rather than the decorations.
Use Zalgo for a title, a name or a short joke line, and keep a plain copy of anything that matters. A message that looks pleasantly cursed on your phone can be unreadable, clipped or rejected on another device.
Where Zalgo text works best
These are suggestions, not fixed rules. Test the exact destination before posting.
Common mistakes
Using Zalgo in a username
Many account systems normalize or restrict unusual characters. A name that looks unique in the preview can be rejected, shortened or stored as plain letters.
Decorating a whole paragraph
Heavy stacks are tiring to read and often overflow the line. Apply the effect to a short line and leave the rest of the message in plain text.
Assuming every app shows the same result
Fonts, line heights and filters belong to the app. The same string can look subtle on one device and unreadable on another, so test before posting.
Deleting the plain version
Keep an unmarked copy of important text. Clean to normal text can recover the letters, but it also removes ordinary accents such as the one in café.
Frequently asked questions
Why is Zalgo text banned?
Many communities ban it because it can break a page layout, slip past word filters, flood a chat or be used to harass people. The rules belong to each platform or server, and some systems remove combining marks automatically.
Is Zalgo text safe?
Yes. It is ordinary Unicode text and does not run code or download anything. The practical risks are readability and compatibility: heavy text can be clipped, rejected by a filter or difficult for a screen reader to announce.
How to get Zalgo text?
Type or paste text into the box above, choose an intensity, and copy the output. The generator adds combining marks above and below each letter. Use the Clean to normal text button to reverse the effect on an existing Zalgo message.
Is Zalgo text allowed in Roblox?
Roblox filters chat, display names and other text fields, and some combining marks are removed or rejected. Short decorated lines often work in an experience, but a name or message that matters should be tested in the exact place you plan to use it.
